It might sound like a small thing. It isn't.
The Problem with Plastic in Surf Retail
Walk into any surf shop and you'll see it everywhere. The surf industry ships millions of products every year, and a significant chunk of that packaging ends up in landfill — or worse, the ocean.
Plastic doesn't disappear. It breaks down into microplastics that enter the water, the fish, and eventually, us. Surfers swim through it. They paddle over it. And for too long, many surf brands have continued packaging their products in single-use plastic without questioning it.
What We Use Instead
When we designed the Wander Supply Co packaging, we asked a simple question: what's the minimum we need to protect the product, and can all of it be recycled when it reaches our customer?
The answer led us to:
• Cardboard boxes and inserts made from recycled content and fully recyclable at kerbside.
The result is a package that feels premium — because well-designed, minimal packaging always does — while leaving nothing behind that will outlast the ocean we love.
Performance Doesn't Have to Cost the Planet
There's a persistent myth in the surf industry that sustainable choices mean compromising on quality. We've built Wander Supply Co to prove that wrong at every level.
Our fins — thrusters, keel twins, quads, 2+1s — are engineered for performance, available in both FCS and Futures compatible systems, and priced to make premium surf hardware accessible. The packaging choice reflects the same thinking: you shouldn't have to choose between a great product and a clean conscience. Same goes for our traction pads.
Surf Culture Has Always Been Environmental Culture
Surfers have been among the most vocal ocean advocates for decades. From the early days of Surfrider Foundation to modern paddle-out protests, the surfing community understands instinctively what so many others are still learning: the ocean isn't a backdrop. It's everything.
When we ship a set of fins or a grip to a surfer in Byron Bay, Margaret River, or the Goldie, we want the whole experience — the product, the packaging, the ethos — to reflect that understanding. Because the people buying from us aren't just buying fins. They're choosing a brand that cares about the same thing they do.
What's Next
Plastic-free packaging is our baseline, not our finish line. We're continuing to look at every aspect of how we make, ship, and sell surf hardware — from the materials in the fins themselves to our fulfilment processes — and asking how we can do better.
